Chances are that if you’re a celebrity today, you are also a Democrat. Most of Hollywood’s most famous actors and actresses are also proud, public members of the blue party. Despite Hollywood’s obvious love of hit-’em-up action movies, the actors in these movies are often liberal and pro-gun control.
In fact, it’s often said that an actor in Hollywood has “made it” when they’re invited to one of George Clooney’s events for environmental causes. Not all Hollywood Democrats, however, are so open about which way they lean. Here are eleven actors and actresses you didn’t know were Democrats.
11. Natalie Portman
Jerusalem born actress Natalie Portman says she will always consider Israel her real home, but that doesn’t stop her from actively involving herself in reputable causes in the United States.
Portman maintains dual-citizenship in the United States and in Israel. A graduate of Harvard University, Portman has used her education and Hollywood platform to speak up for causes that she believes in. According to US Weekly, Portman is an animal-rights activist and a vegan.
In the 2004 election, Portman supported candidate John Kerry. Playing off of the rumor started by Michael Moore in his Fahrenheit 9/11 documentary that Bush took more vacation days than any other president, she urged voters to “give him a long vacation.”
In the 2008 election, Portman initially supported Hillary Clinton. In Elle Magazine’s 2008 edition of Intelligent Woman, Portman said Clinton was “so much more polished and experienced than anyone else.”
When Clinton lost to Obama, Portman continued to show her support for Obama for the remainder of the election. In the 2012 election, Portman supported Obama and, with then-fiance Benjamin Millepied, signed the “I Do Campaign”, a letter which urged Obama to make public his support for gay marriage. According to the Human Rights Campaign, the campaign was also signed by Ellen DeGeneres and wife Portia DeRossi, as well as Facebook co-founder Chris Hughes and NFL players Scott Fujita and Brendon Ayanbadejo.
The star has also been known to speak out against capitalism. When interviewed by Elle Magazine about her role in The Other Boleyn Girl, Portman said she thought the movie was a “cautionary tale against capitalism. All of the characters who subscribe to these values of rising up and gaining power and who will step on anyone to get there are punished.”
In 2012, Portman married Millepied. Together, they have one son, Aleph.
